Narrative

The Lollipop Girls Struggle on the Hard Earth is about the rupture that begins when one leaves the state of childhood and is faced with the task of learning what is Real and what isn’t. It’s about trying to get something back that we never had. As adults, we regularly face the awareness that what we hoped for isn’t there.

Madeline manages a return to the lush innocence of childhood but it feels like a spectacle. This sumptuous world resembles her youthful conception of what being an adult would be like. And Madeline gets lost in the surreal province of make believe. Is this being an adult? Life is full of pretends. Pleasures abound. But Desire is the memory of the missing thing. And when she hears its call, Madeline finds what is missing.
